GOOD SPORTS

At HBPB Swimming, we believe sport is about more than medals — it’s about learning, growing, and enjoying the journey. That’s why we proudly embrace the principles of Good Sports, a nationwide initiative dedicated to creating safe, responsible, and positive sporting environments for everyone.
For parents, Good Sports provides clear guidance on how to support your children in sport without adding pressure. It encourages families to:
Prioritise Wellbeing: Focus on your child’s enjoyment, confidence, and development rather than just results.
Promote Respect: Encourage fair play, respect for coaches, teammates, officials, and opponents, and positive communication at all times.
Model Healthy Choices: Demonstrate responsible behaviours around alcohol, nutrition, and lifestyle — creating an environment that supports your child’s growth both in and out of the pool.
Stay Involved Positively: Celebrate effort and improvement, offer encouragement, and be a constructive presence at training sessions and competitions.
Parents are vital in shaping the experience of young swimmers. By aligning with Good Sports principles, families help ensure that swimming remains fun, safe, and rewarding.
Coaches are more than instructors — they are mentors, role models, and advocates for positive sporting culture. In line with Good Sports, our coaches:
Lead by Example: Demonstrating respect, fairness, and integrity both in and out of the pool.
Encourage Personal Growth: Supporting swimmers of all abilities to set goals, develop skills, and celebrate achievements.
Foster Inclusion: Creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, regardless of ability, background, or experience.
Promote Safe Practices: Ensuring that training and competitions are conducted safely, with athlete wellbeing as the priority.
By working together — coaches, parents, and swimmers — we create a community that values fun, respect, and lifelong love of swimming.
We encourage all our clubs, families, and volunteers to embrace Good Sports principles and help make [Region Name] a leader in positive, responsible sporting culture.

The Good Sports Spine is a tool to help parents, coaches, teachers and aports administrators understand how they impact children's sport experiences.
The two different climates should be seen as opposite ends of a continuum. To support children to have positive sporting experiences, adults should sim to always fall under the Climate of Development.
